Mike Schloesser has broken his own world record for the 50m compound round. Mike, nicknamed “Mister Perfect” after his unbeatable perfect score of 600 for the indoor 18m round, shot 717 out of a possible 720 at the first stage of the World Cup in Shanghai in April.
The USA’s compound team also broke its own record for the team qualifying round, with all three archers qualified in the top five. The previous record, which was set by the USA’s Braden Gellenthien, Reo Wilde and Jesse Broadwater in Torino in 2011, stood at 2130, but the trio of Reo Wilde (712), Steve Anderson (711) and Alex Wifler (710) broke that by three points to set a new world record benchmark of 2133. The team of Mike Schloesser, Peter Elzinga and Thomas van Eil from the Netherlands had done enough to match the old record of 2130, and establish it as a new European record.
The Shangahi qualification day seemed to encourage good performances, as two more archers approached world record scoring. Deepika Kumari of India was on course to break Ki Bo Bae’s record of 686 for the 70m round in the women’s recurve division, but she couldn’t quite push it right to the end and tied the record instead. Brady Ellison recorded not quite a world record, but the third-highest score posted for the 70m round in the men’s recurve division, shooting 597 to qualify top of the ranks at the same event.
In May at the European Outdoor Championships, two nations broke the European record for the mixed-team matchplay knockout round, with France (Amelie Sancenot, Dominique Genet) and Turkey (Yesim Bostan, Emre Comez) both hitting scores of 159 out of a possible 160. The previous record was 158 points, set two European Championships ago in 2012 in the Netherlands by teams from Italy, the Netherlands, and Russia.
